Puerto Cabezas Nicaragua Hit By Hurricane Felix
Hurricane Felix hit the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua early this Tuesday morning. It was in 1988 that Hurricane Joan smashed into Bluefields. Now Puerto Cabezas has received the brunt of the damages. Felix touched land at a category 5 intensity, slowing down to 4 and finally to a force 3 as it proceeded overland. Hurricanes have gained a bit of notoriety over the years. Joan though expected, no one anticipated its ferocity. Felix, landing on Puerto Cabeza, where no such hurricane has ever taken place, again took most of the town by surprise with the extent of its toll.
The roofs of the Verbo orphanage, schools, disciples centers and the homes of many of the members and that of the pastor Earl and Damaris Bowie have been severely damaged. I´ve been able to speak with Earl during this morning and afternoon, cell phone connection has been maintained. Huddled on his back porch, he was able to survey the lifting of many roofs, falling of trees, amidst the massively sweeping rains. Four hours later Earl was able to drive through town. Many of the fragile, older wooden houses had been toppled. Trees falling upon homes reeked their costly havoc.
The ocean was of course a swirling, battering force causing the wreckage of many boats, the future effect upon the singular livelihood of their owners will be hard felt. Full extent of the damage is impossible to calculate this early.
Verbo maybe used to assist in bringing a Canadian plane load of donations. At this time we are attempting to obtain the permission for the aircraft to bypass Managua and land directly in Puerto Cabezas. ‘Coincidently’, during the 1980s, due to its remotish locale, a massive air strip was laid down in Puerto Cabezas. Virtually capable of receiving any size aircraft.
Verbo was birthed due a response to an earthquake in Guatemala. The Christian desire to help in times of pronounced need, does not require a doctrinal basis, it is simply an extremely proud element of our Judeo-Christian heritage. The balance of the material realities and the Spiritual truths received some Grecian iniciated philosophical confusion. In these days, the Lord seems to be lifting up a church, that like the laborers of Nehimiah’s rebuilding of the wall surrounding Jerusalem, that will carry weapon in one hand, a tool in the other.
This sweeping disaster striking Puerto Cabezas gives us the opportunity to serve the genuinely needy, and proclaim the everlasting truth of the gospel. Please help us demonstrate the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
Please make a donation to help Hurricane Felix victims today. $5, $25, $50 or more can and will make a big difference in the lives of these Nicaraguan families.
