Update:  Visiting the Hurricane Destroyed Area of Puerto Cabezas Again

I was able to make another trip to Puerto Cabezas, and visit a few of the surrounding communities.  With over 300 villages hit and affected by hurricane Felix, the widespread destruction in this remote area is daunting.  The Verbo church in Nicaragua is ‘adopting’ the neighborhood of ‘La Experanza’ and the village of Betania to begin a reconstruction campaign.  Recent donations reflects the more integrated approach we hope to engage, namely that of children’s feeding centers, to go along side the home building.

One of the recent projects the brothers in Port have begun is to begin pulling up the leaning homes damaged from the hurricane winds.  Houses that were not totally collapsed, but still dangerously inclined, can be righted within a couple of hours with an X Brace.  “X” braces are used to pull up a leaning house and the braces are nailed into the wooden posts of the foundation; this secures these homes and gives a feeling of stability for these families.  The Lord’s testimony in this is clearly shown in the thankfulness of these people.

Recently, our president, Daniel Ortega, was invited to speak at the United Nations assembly, and wasted an opportunity to help his people.  Supposedly to speak of the needs of the Misquito people, he turned it into a diatribe upholding North Korea and Iran’s ‘Right’ to nuclear preparations, Fidel Castro’s heroic role in the western hemisphere in spite of US assassins.   And the actual cause of the attack upon the twin towers being the effect of global capitalism.  Daniel’s statement that he has been waiting 17 years (since the Sandinista loss of elections in 1990), to deliver his point of view, makes it pretty clear this screaming monologue expresses his vision, character and purposes.  Change in basic ideology is wistful thinking.  Daniel sacrificed the opportunity for the betterment of his own people in exchange for a chance at a world platform from which to promote the detrimental, and exceedingly dangerous, winds of leftist positioning in the hemisphere.

Verbo’s hope is to rise up the Christian testimony of faith and works that might go hand in hand.  Meeting needs in the aftermath of a natural, or even war torn political, disaster is a part of our spiritual DNA.  Please pray for our brother Earl Bowie and his wife Damaris, and all the church of Puerto Cabezas, that we might be guided towards the lasting change in all areas of life that the Lord so designed for the carriers of His image.  We also appreciate and thank you for any financial support you can give the people of Nicaragua at this time.
